Port, sherry, Madeira and Tokaji aszú. A fundamentally different trip: the drama is in cellars, casks and ageing rather than in the vineyard, and the wines have been made this way for centuries because of how they travelled.
The region's principal wines are fortified or botrytis-affected, as listed in its own grape line.
These are lodge-and-bodega trips, run to fixed tour times, often in cold buildings. Two visits is a full day, and the tastings are slower than you expect.
PT Portugal
Schist terraces, river light and a journey that works beautifully by rail.
Rail for the valley spine; local transfer for hillside estates.

Funchal is walkable and the lodges are in town; the terraces themselves need a bus, taxi or a levada walk.

Direct trains from Budapest to Tokaj; the villages beyond need a taxi or a hired car.
