Madeira
Terraced smallholdings above the Atlantic, and a fortified wine deliberately aged by heat.
Funchal is walkable and the lodges are in town; the terraces themselves need a bus, taxi or a levada walk.

Stellenbosch
Cape Dutch farms under granite mountains, an hour from a city, with harvest in the European winter.
Around 45 minutes from Cape Town by road. Distances between farms are short but a booked driver is the sane choice.
Plan around: Harvest-season tastings and the restaurants on the estates, which fill early.

Fog in the valleys, Nebbiolo on the ridges and a food culture that quietly outranks the wine.
Rail to Alba or Asti, then a car or driver — the hill villages are close together but badly linked to each other.

Buses run the island spine; the wineries are close enough that a taxi between two is cheap.

Wachau
Thirty-six kilometres of terraced Danube between two abbeys, walkable end to end.
Train from Vienna to Krems, then the valley by bike, boat or local bus. A car is genuinely unnecessary.
