ContextPoios terraces · estufagem ageing

Vines grow on poios, the terraces cut into the island's slopes, often trained overhead on latada pergolas. What makes the wine unlike any other is estufagem: deliberate heating after fortification, formalising what long sea voyages once did to it by accident.

Apr — Oct

The window we would aim for is Apr — Oct. Across the year this region reads best in Apr–Jun and Jul–Aug and Nov–Mar.

It is the month guide’s featured region in DEC — see the full wine year for how that sits against everywhere else.

An editorial guide, not a weather or availability guarantee — recheck before booking.

Funchal Câmara de Lobos

Funchal is walkable and the lodges are in town; the terraces themselves need a bus, taxi or a levada walk.

What will not wait.

Lodge tastings of the older vintages, which are poured by appointment.

The rhythm that works.

Treat the wine as one thread among the walking, not the reason for every day.
