Vines grow on poios, the terraces cut into the island's slopes, often trained overhead on latada pergolas. What makes the wine unlike any other is estufagem: deliberate heating after fortification, formalising what long sea voyages once did to it by accident.

Funchal is walkable and the lodges are in town; the terraces themselves need a bus, taxi or a levada walk.
