ContextGallo Nero zone since 1924 · ~7,200 ha of vine

The Gallo Nero has marked the zone since the consorzio was founded at Radda in 1924. Its boundaries enclose about 71,800 hectares of countryside but only some 7,200 hectares of vine — most of Chianti Classico is woodland, and it looks it.

The window we would aim for is May — Jun · Sep — Oct. Across the year this region reads best in Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct.

Florence Greve or Radda

A car is the honest answer between the villages; Florence and Siena bracket the zone by rail and bus.

What will not wait.

Estate visits and any restaurant you have actually chosen.

The rhythm that works.

Stay in the zone rather than day-tripping from Florence, and keep the driving under an hour a day.
